Nikos Baikas

Studies at the Athens School of Fine Arts for a short period of time (in 1967), before going to Rome and Florence where he enrolls himself in the Accademia di Belle Arti. In 1977 he creates a series of designs on type-writing paper in the form of notes, without any aesthetic processing. From then on, pencil and paper become the main means of his visual language. Via his work, the artist studies geometry, symmetry, light and shadow, gravity, balance within a philosophical framework. In his black-and-white enigmatic compositions, anthropomorphic forms defy gravity and coexist with objects and geometrical shapes often in a paradoxical manner which overthrows common sense and leads towards different interpretations and philosophical parameters.

The artist starts exhibiting his work in the early Eighties with solo exhibitions in Greece and abroad. He has participated in group exhibitions (Documenta, 1992, Kassel).
